What to tell us when you call

Say which half of the range has failed and exactly how. A gas oven that clicks and glows but never lights, an electric bake element that stays dark, a surface burner that works only on high: each points at a different part. Include whether the range is gas, electric or dual-fuel, and whether the display shows a code.

A photograph of the rating plate is often more useful than a long description.

Gas ranges and houses off the main

Not every house on the outer lots is connected to the gas main, and a range that came from a mains-gas house will run badly on bottled gas until it is converted. Range not converted for propane shows up as tall, yellow, sooty flames and scorched pans.

Conversion means changing orifices and adjusting the regulator. That is gas work and never a weekend project; stop using the range until it is done properly.
