Not Freezing
Not Freezing means the cabinet is running but never reaches a safe holding temperature, and everything inside softens or thaws. The compressor may hum, click and stop, or run without producing any cold at all. A cabinet that has been warm for several hours puts the whole load at risk, so the cause needs identifying quickly rather than waiting to see whether it recovers.

- Repair
- We confirm first whether the compressor is actually running and drawing current, then read the frost pattern along the suction line to separate a sealed-system fault from a control fault. A dead start relay, open overload or failed cold control is replaced and the cabinet watched through a full pull-down. Where the evaporator is packed solid we clear it and test the defrost circuit, because ice will return otherwise. Sealed-system losses are traced, repaired and recharged by weight.

Excessive Frost Buildup
Excessive Frost Buildup on a frost-free freezer means the defrost cycle is no longer clearing the evaporator, so each cooling period adds another layer of ice. Shelves and packets become welded together and airflow drops until the cabinet warms. Manual defrosting restores it briefly, but the frost returns within a few weeks unless the defrost circuit itself is repaired.

Strange Noise
Strange Noise covers the continuous mechanical sounds a freezer should not make: a harsh drone, a rattle that rises with the compressor, or a scraping from behind the rear panel. Freezers are never silent, but a sound that is new is worth investigating. Some noises are harmless vibration; others mark a bearing or a blade on its way out.

Water Leaking from Freezer shows as a pool on the floor, water under the bottom basket, or ice spreading across the cabinet base. Melt water is produced normally during every defrost, so a leak usually means it is escaping instead of reaching the evaporation tray. On a wooden floor the damage builds quickly, which makes this worth attending to promptly.

Door Seal Issue
Door Seal Issue is the general case of a door that closes but no longer seals cleanly, usually noticed as a cold draught at the edge, a damp gasket, or frost creeping along one side. The cabinet still works, simply less efficiently, and the compressor runs longer than it should. Most seal problems start small and are easy to correct before they turn into ice.

Temperature Not Consistent describes a freezer where one part of the cabinet holds properly while another drifts warm, or where readings wander between checks. Food near the door softens while the back stays rock hard. The pattern points at air movement and sensing rather than at the compressor, which usually sounds perfectly normal throughout.

Condenser Coils Dirty means the heat-rejecting coil at the back or underneath is blanketed with dust, pet hair and lint, so heat cannot leave the system. It is the most common avoidable cause of premature compressor failure.

Evaporator Fan Failure
Evaporator Fan Failure stops cold air being moved out of the coil compartment and around the cabinet, so the coil frosts heavily while the shelves warm. On a frost-free upright the fan sits behind the rear panel and its failure is often heard first as a squeal or a chirp, then as silence. The cabinet can look normal from the front while food thaws on the door shelves.

Door Gasket Failure means the seal itself has physically given up, rather than simply needing adjustment. Typical signs are a split at a corner, a torn magnetic strip, or a section that has shrunk away from the retaining channel and will no longer touch the cabinet. Once the gasket is damaged, no amount of realignment restores the seal and the cabinet frosts continuously.

- We identify the exact gasket for the model and door, since profiles differ even within one manufacturer range. The door is then squared up and the seal proved along its whole length before the cabinet is returned to service.

The freezer symptom most often misread
Across every brand we service, the freezer fault we see misinterpreted most is silent failure: a freezer in a garage or basement gives no fault code and no alarm, so the first indication is usually food that has thawed and refrozen. It matters because the wrong reading leads to the wrong part, and on a freezer the wrong part is frequently the most expensive one in the machine.

Noise as a diagnostic signal
An unfamiliar noise is the cheapest fault report an appliance can give you, and in Greater Boston it is the one most often ignored until it is not cheap any more. A bearing that has started to sound is a bearing that can still be replaced; the same bearing left for a season takes the drum, the shaft or the motor with it.
Noise also localises well. A rhythmic sound tied to drum rotation, a whine that tracks pump speed, a click at the start of a cycle and a rattle only under load are four different components. Describing when the sound happens rather than what it sounds like is what lets us bring the right part.
Water is the variable most often blamed and most often misjudged in Greater Boston. Reservoir supply through the MWRA is soft enough that hardness rarely explains a failure on its own, while a private well a few towns further out can be hard enough that descaling is routine maintenance. Two houses with the same appliance and the same symptom can therefore need different work, which is why we ask what the property is on.
Where scale is present it builds slowly, so nothing fails on a particular day — performance degrades until the appliance crosses the line into a fault code, and by then the display is reporting an electronic problem that started as a mechanical one. The components that suffer are always the same: heating elements, inlet valves, pressure and turbidity sensors, and any narrow passage carrying water under pressure. On a dishwasher it is worth setting the machine's own water-hardness parameter to match the actual supply, which a surprising number of installers skip; we set it during the visit at no extra cost when the model supports it.
A restricted vent is the single most under-diagnosed appliance fault in Greater Boston, and it is the one most likely to have been "repaired" twice already before we see it. The tell is a dryer that heats normally at the start of a cycle and then cuts out, or one that runs its full cycle and leaves the load warm and damp.
We check the transition hose behind the machine first, then the run itself, then the exterior termination — which in January is as likely to have iced over as to be blocked with lint, and produces an identical symptom. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, the shortest practical path, and a termination that actually opens are what a dryer needs; foil accordion hose stuffed into the gap behind a machine is what it usually has. Where the run is genuinely too long for the appliance, we say so — that is a duct problem, not something a new thermal fuse will solve.
