Doors that take a beating

What True cabinets wear out is door hardware: hinge cartridges and gaskets. A door that has stopped closing on its own, or a gasket split at a corner, pours in heat the refrigeration was not designed to handle.

Both parts are routinely stocked, and replacing them is quick. Neither is a reason to consider a new cabinet. Once the door seals again, the compressor's run time usually drops noticeably.

Fans, drains and defrost

An evaporator fan motor that fails leaves the compressor running while no cold air moves across the shelves. A blocked drain line pools meltwater in the cabinet base, where it can freeze into a slab. Levelling the cabinet helps the drain empty as it should.

Defrost faults ice the evaporator and choke airflow. How the frost lies on the coil tells the technician whether defrost, airflow or a poorly sealing door is to blame.

Grease and refrigerant

A condenser coated in cooking grease cannot shed heat, and the compressor pays for it. Cleaning is routine and far cheaper than the alternative.

Newer True equipment runs on hydrocarbon refrigerant, which is flammable and demands its own handling procedure. Any sealed-system work follows EPA 608 handling and that procedure.
