Many Frigidaire freezers around Greater Boston are separate uprights or chests in basements and back rooms. With no alarm and no display, a failure is usually discovered by lifting a lid onto thawed and refrozen food.

On a chest, check that the drain plug went back in after the last manual defrost and that the lid still presses its gasket evenly all round. Both are simple owner checks that explain a surprising share of calls.

Defrost and fans on self-defrosting models

Where the freezer defrosts itself, the heater and its thermostat are the commonest failures, followed by the evaporator fan motor. Either one stops air crossing the coil and lets the cabinet drift upward.

Condenser fouling behind the lower grille produces a slower version of the same complaint. The technician clears it and measures run time before deciding whether anything else has failed.

Side-by-side doors and the hinge harness

On side-by-side combinations, the door-mounted ice and water dispenser fails more often in its wiring than in its mechanism. The harness bends at the hinge with every opening, and a conductor eventually cracks there.

Door gaskets that no longer compress let warm, moist air into the cabinet. It shows up as frost along the frame and a fur of ice crystals on packaging.
