Diagnosing one column at a time

The technician treats the freezer column as its own machine: its fan, its defrost circuit, its sensors and its sealed system. Evidence from the fridge column next door is irrelevant to the answer.

Frost on the freezer's evaporator is read first. A uniform coat, a lopsided coat and a solid block each point toward a different part.

Built into joinery

Removing a column means working around cabinetry and panels, so the repair threshold sits far above that of a freestanding freezer. Most faults, even substantial ones, are worth fixing in place.

Condenser airflow is restricted in any built-in installation. Keeping the grille and coil clean takes load off the compressor and is part of each visit. Clearing lint and dust from the toe grille is something owners can do safely between visits with the power off.

Doors and sensors

Column doors carry heavy cabinetry panels that eventually flatten the gasket. A seal that no longer grips lets in warm air, and frost follows along the gap.

Thermistors drift with age and shift the column's temperature with them. Testing them is quick and avoids needless work on the control. A column that reads warm on its display but checks correctly with a thermometer is almost always a sensor problem.
