How we write these guides

Repair guides and appliance pages

Every guide on this site starts with a technician who has had the machine open. That is the part that matters, and the rest of this page explains exactly what it does and does not mean.

Who writes them

The guides are written by the people who do the work — the same four who answer the phone and turn up at the door. Every article carries a byline, and every byline links to that person's entry on our about page, with their role and what they actually specialise in.

We do not publish anonymous articles, and we do not use invented author names. If a guide is about commercial refrigeration it is written by the technician who runs the restaurant accounts; if it is about panel-ready built-ins it is written by the technician who works them.

How a guide gets written

  1. It starts from real calls. The subject of a guide is something we are actually being called out for — a fault we keep seeing, or a question we keep answering on the phone.
  2. A technician provides the substance. The diagnosis, the causes, the order of checks and the figures come from the technician, not from other websites.
  3. We use AI tools to help with drafting. We use them to turn a technician's account into readable prose, to structure an article and to tidy the writing. We do not use them to invent the technical content, and we do not publish anything generated without a technician behind it.
  4. A technician reads it before it goes up. Nothing is published that the named author has not checked. If the article says a part usually fails a certain way, that is because someone here has replaced it.

Town, brand and appliance pages

The pages for each town we cover, each manufacturer and each appliance work differently from the guides. They were drafted with AI tools from our own notes on each area's water supply, housing and access, and on each manufacturer's platform. They carry no named author, and they have not each been read by a technician before going up. If something on one of them is wrong for your town or your machine, tell us and we will correct it.

What we verify, and what we do not

  • We are an independent shop. We hold no manufacturer authorisation and do not claim any. Where a guide names the platforms a technician works on, that is experience, not factory certification.
  • We do not publish prices. You will not find a price list or a cost range anywhere on this site, and that is deliberate: a figure quoted before anyone has seen the machine is a guess, and guesses are what people end up arguing about later. The guides describe what usually fails and how involved the repair tends to be. The number for your machine comes after a technician has diagnosed it, and once given it is fixed before any work starts. The one figure published anywhere on this site is the $20 allowance off labour for veterans and customers over 65, which is a discount rather than a price.
  • We do not publish reviews or ratings we cannot attribute. There is no star rating anywhere on this site, because we have no verified first-party review set behind one.
  • Guides can go out of date. Manufacturers change parts and revise procedures. A guide reflects what was true when its named author wrote it.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, we would rather know. Tell us which guide and what is wrong with it and it goes to the technician whose name is on it. Where a correction changes the substance of an article we change the article rather than quietly adjusting a sentence.

This page is about the writing. For anything about a repair — a quote, a booking, a part — the phone is faster than a form.
