Oven Not Heating
Oven Not Heating means the cavity stays cold while the control panel behaves normally. On an electric oven the bake element or its relay is the usual culprit; on gas the fault sits in the igniter and safety valve chain, where a weak igniter never draws enough current to open the valve. An open thermal fuse or tripped high-limit will also kill heat entirely.

- Repair
- We confirm the cavity really is cold rather than badly calibrated, then work the heat chain in order: supply at the terminal block, thermal fuse and high-limit continuity, element resistance or igniter current draw, and finally the relay output that feeds them. Gas work ends with a flame and valve check under load. The failed part is replaced, and the oven is run up to a set point and watched through a full cycle.

Uneven Heating
Uneven Heating shows as one side or one rack running hotter than the rest, with baked goods colouring unevenly across a single tray. The cavity is reaching temperature but not distributing it, which points at circulation, a leaking door or an element heating unequally rather than at a total loss of heat.

- Repair
- Mapping comes first: we log cavity temperature at several rack positions to see where the gradient sits, rather than adjusting calibration blind. A gradient front to back usually means circulation or a leaking door; side to side points at the element or its supply. We check gasket compression and hinge alignment, confirm the convection fan runs when called, and correct the cause found before rechecking the spread across the cavity.

Door Won't Close Properly
Door Won't Close Properly describes a door that meets resistance or sits proud of the frame instead of pulling flush. Something is physically in the way, or the hinges no longer run true, so the latch cannot draw the door home. Heat escapes at the gap, and on a self-clean model the cycle will refuse to start.

- Repair
- The door comes off so the hinges can be checked away from the cabinet: we look for bent arms, worn pivots and slots packed with grease or crumbs. The gasket is reseated or renewed where it no longer sits in its channel, hinge receivers are cleaned, and the door is refitted and adjusted until it pulls flush all round. A closing test with a strip of paper confirms even grip at every edge.

Self-Clean Not Working
Self-Clean Not Working covers a pyrolytic cycle that refuses to start at all. The control needs to see the door latched and closed before it will commit, so a latch motor that does not drive, or a switch that never reports locked, stops the sequence before any heat is applied. The rest of the oven usually works normally.

- Repair
- We watch the latch when the cycle is requested and listen for the motor, then measure the switch that tells the board the door is secure. If the motor drives but the switch never changes state, the cam or the switch is at fault; if nothing moves, we check the drive circuit back to the board. After repair the cycle is started, lock-up confirmed, and the oven cooled and unlocked under supervision.

Burner Not Working
Burner Not Working on a gas oven means the burner inside the cavity fails to carry a flame, so the oven never heats although the controls respond. The fault lies in the ignition and gas train: a burner whose ports are blocked, an igniter that never reaches ignition temperature, or a valve that stays shut. Unburnt gas released during failed attempts makes this a job for a technician.

- Repair
- Gas is isolated before anything is dismantled. The burner is drawn forward, the ports cleared and inspected for corrosion, the igniter bracket checked for alignment, and igniter current measured in circuit to see whether the valve is ever given the signal it needs. Ignition is then observed from cold: we want a prompt light, a stable blue flame across the full burner, and clean shut-off when heat is satisfied.

Display / Control Issue
Display / Control Issue covers a panel that has gone blank, shows scrambled segments or ignores presses, leaving the oven unusable even when its heating parts are sound. The display, the keypad membrane and the board that drives both sit directly above a hot cavity, and heat, moisture and grease reach them over time.

- Repair
- We take the control panel down and separate the two possibilities: a board that is not driving the display, or a display and keypad that are not responding to a healthy board. Supply voltages at the board are measured, the ribbon connector reseated and inspected for corrosion, and keypad continuity checked press by press. Boards showing heat-darkened tracks or swollen components are replaced rather than patched, then every function is exercised.

Oven Temperature Inaccurate
Oven Temperature Inaccurate means the oven holds a steady temperature that is simply not the one requested, so recipes run consistently fast or slow. This is a sensing and calibration fault rather than a heating failure: the control is doing its job on bad information, or the stored offset no longer matches the cavity.

- An oven sensor whose resistance has drifted · A calibration offset lost after a board change · A sensor probe touching the cavity wall · Heat lost past a tired door gasket · A thermostat bulb that has lost its charge
- Repair
- Measured readings settle this. We log cavity temperature against the set point over several heat cycles to separate a constant offset from a slow drift. The sensor is measured cold and hot against its resistance curve, and its probe repositioned if it sits against metal. A sensor outside tolerance is replaced; one within tolerance means the stored calibration is adjusted at the control, then verified by a fresh logged run.

Gas Smell from Oven
Gas Smell from Oven means unburnt gas is escaping into the room, which is an immediate safety matter rather than a performance complaint. The source may be a joint in the supply, a valve no longer seating, or a burner releasing gas during failed ignition attempts. The oven should be shut off at the isolator and the room ventilated.

- Repair
- This is not a do-it-yourself repair. Gas is isolated at the appliance valve, the room ventilated, and no switch or flame operated in the meantime. The technician leak-tests the supply, connector, manifold and valve body with a detector and solution, pressure-tests where the reading is ambiguous, and renews any component found passing gas. The appliance returns to service only after a clean test and a proper ignition and flame check.

Bake Element Burned Out
Bake Element Burned Out means the lower element has failed open, so the cavity gets little or no heat while the broil element and controls carry on normally. A break usually announces itself with a bright flash and a bang, and the element often shows a blister or a parted section at the failure point.

- Repair
- Power is isolated at the breaker, the element unbolted from the rear wall, and its resistance measured end to end along with insulation resistance to earth, so a partly breached element is not refitted. The terminal receptacles and wire tails are inspected, since a burnt tail will destroy the new element too, and are renewed when discoloured. The replacement is fitted, sealed at the rear, and the oven run to temperature.

Broil Element Burned Out
Broil Element Burned Out means the upper element no longer glows, so grilling and browning fail while baking still works. Because preheat on many ovens uses both elements, a failed broil element also shows up as slow preheating long before anyone tries to grill. The break is often visible as a split or blistered section.

- Repair
- With the supply isolated we measure the upper element for continuity and for leakage to earth, then check that the board is actually switching the broil circuit, because a sound element with no supply is a relay fault rather than an element fault. A failed element is withdrawn from the cavity roof, its receptacles renewed if heat-damaged, and the new one fitted. Browning is then checked across the width of the cavity.

Gas Igniter Not Glowing
Gas Igniter Not Glowing means the hot-surface igniter stays dark when bake is called, so the safety valve is never asked to open and no gas is delivered. Carbide igniters fail open as they age, and the ceramic block and its leads sit in a hot, greasy part of the oven where wiring degrades.

- Repair
- After isolating the supply we check the igniter for continuity, then restore power and watch the circuit under a call for heat: no supply at the igniter points upstream at the board or harness, while supply with no glow condemns the igniter. Connectors are inspected for heat damage and replaced with high-temperature parts. A new igniter is handled by its bracket only, since finger contact shortens carbide life, and ignition is proved.

Gas Oven Burner Not Lighting
Gas Oven Burner Not Lighting describes an igniter that glows as it should while the burner never takes light. Current draw through the igniter is what opens the safety valve, so an igniter that looks healthy but has weakened with age will never pull enough to unlatch it. A worn valve or blocked ports give the same symptom.

- Repair
- Current draw is measured in series with the igniter while bake is called, which is the only reliable way to tell a tired igniter from a failed valve. Ports are cleared, supply pressure checked at the appliance, and ignition observed from cold repeatedly before the oven is handed back.

Can you tell me what is wrong over the phone?
We can usually tell you the range of things it might be, and we will. What we will not do is quote a repair from a description, because a symptom does not identify a fault: "not cooling" covers a failed evaporator fan, an iced-over evaporator, a stuck damper, a leaking sealed system and a control that has lost its sensor, and those are separated by several hundred dollars. Quoting before diagnosing is how the price changes later, and our price does not change.

Across every brand we service, the oven fault we see misinterpreted most is an oven that 'runs cold' when it is actually cycling correctly around a badly calibrated set point, which is an adjustment rather than a repair on most models. It matters because the wrong reading leads to the wrong part, and on an oven the wrong part is frequently the most expensive one in the machine.

When repair stops making sense
Not every appliance in Greater Boston is worth fixing, and we will tell you when yours is not. The threshold is roughly this: if the repair costs more than about half of a comparable new machine, and the appliance is past two-thirds of its expected life, replacing is usually the better decision. A sealed-system failure on a ten-year-old mass-market refrigerator is the clearest example.
The calculation changes completely for built-in and integrated equipment, which is why the estate and custom kitchens across Greater Boston get different advice. Replacing a panel-ready column or a fitted double oven means cabinetry work, so components that would end a freestanding machine's life are routine repairs on those. We give you the number for both paths and let you choose.
We will decline work in Greater Boston rather than do it unsafely. That covers reconnecting gas equipment to a defective supply, returning a dryer to service on a vent we can see is blocked, and re-energising an appliance whose supply circuit is faulty. In each case the underlying problem is outside the appliance and needs the right trade.
It also means we tell you when a symptom is not an appliance fault at all. A breaker that trips whenever the dryer runs may be a dryer fault; it may equally be a shared or undersized circuit. Fitting parts until the symptom moves is not diagnosis.
