Not Heating on a dryer means the drum turns and the cycle runs to completion, but the air leaving the machine is no warmer than the room. The heat source has failed, the safety chain has opened, or on an electric machine half the supply has been lost. Each of those produces identical behaviour at the door.
- Causes
- An open heating element coil · A failed gas igniter or flame sensor · A thermal fuse opened by a blocked vent · An open high-limit thermostat · A lost supply leg at the breaker or outlet
- Repair
- We meter the supply first, because a lost leg on an electric dryer mimics a dead element exactly and costs nothing to rule out. Continuity across the element, thermal fuse, cycling thermostat and high-limit follows, in that order, so the safety chain is cleared before any heating part is condemned. On gas machines we watch the ignition sequence instead. Whatever we replace, we then measure exhaust airflow, since a restricted vent is what opens most of these devices.

Drum Not Tumbling
Drum Not Tumbling on a dryer describes a machine that hums or runs while the drum stays still. The motor is usually alive and the drive path between it and the drum has parted. Turning the drum by hand separates a broken belt, which spins freely, from a seized drum, which will not move at all.

- Repair
- The cabinet comes apart far enough to see the belt, because everything else is guesswork until it does. We spin the idler and the motor shaft by hand to confirm both run free, check the drum for trapped clothing, then reassemble and listen through a complete tumble before the panels go back on.

Takes Too Long to Dry on a dryer usually means the machine is heating properly but cannot carry the moisture away. Damp air that cannot leave simply recirculates, so the load stays wet while the cabinet gets hot. Restricted venting is the most under-diagnosed fault on this appliance, and it is where this symptom points first.

Making Loud Noise
Making Loud Noise on a dryer covers a sudden change in the sound the machine makes, rather than a gradual one. A noise that appeared overnight usually has an object behind it, or a fastener that has worked loose, and those are found by listening before anything is dismantled.

- Repair

Foreign objects are recovered from the blower housing and the drum seam, a loose blower wheel is refitted or replaced with its clamp, and the rear ducting is secured. A full cycle then confirms the original sound has gone.

Won't Start
Won't Start on a dryer describes a machine with a lit panel that does nothing when the cycle is started. Power has reached the control, so the fault lies in what the control checks before it energises the motor, or in the motor itself.

- Repair
- We confirm the door circuit closes first, since the control simply ignores a start request without it. If those pass, the motor is checked for a failed start winding or a stuck centrifugal switch. The faulty device is replaced and the start sequence proved from cold.

Dryer Overheating means cabinet, door glass or load are coming out hotter than the cycle should allow. Heat that cannot escape with the air builds inside the drum and around the element housing, which is how scorched fabric and lint ignition begin. This is treated as a fire risk rather than a comfort complaint.

Not Drying Clothes on a dryer means a full cycle ends with the load still wet, whether or not the machine got hot. Drying needs heat and airflow together, and either one missing produces the same complaint at the door. The distinction is made by feeling the exhaust rather than the drum.

What does the fault code on my appliance actually mean?
Less than people expect. On almost all modern equipment a code names a condition rather than a component — "did not drain in the expected time", "did not reach the expected temperature" — and several different failures produce the same condition. Buying the part that the internet associates with a code is how owners end up with a non-returnable component and a still-broken machine.
