GE's fault codes on its electronic dryers can highlight a heat or sensor problem, but the underlying restriction is usually outside the cabinet.

Airflow is measured, not assumed

Our first check on a GE dryer is how strongly air arrives at the termination while the machine runs. In basements across Greater Boston, where exhaust often crosses a long run through old brick or a shared wall, that reading is frequently far below what the dryer needs.

Clearing the run can restore normal drying without a single part. When a part has failed, it is usually because the restriction cooked it.

Belt, coupler and motor wear

A GE dryer that hums but will not turn the drum has typically lost its belt or seized an idler pulley. Squeaking at start-up points at worn drum glides or bearings, which tend to go gradually.

These mechanical parts are cheaper than electronic ones, and most GE dryers can be opened quickly to replace them.

Codes versus meters

On GE dryers with an electronic panel, the fault code shows the circuit where the dryer saw trouble. It does not tell you if a thermistor drifted or a relay on the control board stuck.

We test the sensor and the thermostat with a meter before recommending a board, so a sensor fault does not become an expensive control replacement.
