That combination sends many owners shopping for a new appliance. In most cases the actual repair is a heater, a thermostat or a sensor, which sits at the inexpensive end of refrigeration work.

Why a cold freezer can still hold the fault

The freezer is where the evaporator lives, so it is the last part of the cabinet to feel a defrost failure. Symptoms appear first in the milk and the salad drawer, which is exactly why the freezer seldom gets suspected.

The technician looks behind the rear freezer panel for a coil choked with frost, then tests the heater, the defrost thermostat and the control that schedules them. Naming the failed component comes before any figure is quoted.

A platform of its own

GE Appliances does not share its engineering with Whirlpool. Its boards, harnesses and panels belong to GE and its Hotpoint badge, so a part from a similar-looking competitor cabinet will not fit.

What GE does offer is deep parts distribution, with control boards sold separately from the panels mounted in front of them. That keeps a board fault from escalating into a whole control assembly.

Fans, grilles and the door dispenser

An evaporator fan that stalls reproduces much of the defrost symptom, so both are checked together. Down at floor level, debris behind the lower grille can obstruct the condenser fan, leaving the compressor running hot and long.

Door-mounted dispensers bring faults of their own. A water inlet valve that sticks or weeps can leave ice forming at the foot of the door or stop the ice maker from filling at all.
