Fridge Warm, Freezer Cold? Read the Frost Pattern First

A refrigerator that drifts warm while the freezer still works is almost never low on refrigerant. Here is the frost pattern we look for on Greater Boston service calls and what each one means.

Dominic VargaFounder & Lead Technician

Almost every "my fridge stopped cooling" call splits into two very different jobs, and you can tell which one you have in about ninety seconds. The fresh-food compartment drifting warm while the freezer stays hard-frozen is an air-movement or defrost problem. Both compartments warm at the same time is a compressor, control or sealed-system problem. Same complaint, different parts, very different price.

The 90-second check before you call anyone

Open the freezer and look at the back wall, then pull the bottom drawer out and look behind it.

  • Freezer cold, fridge warm, and you can hear no fan running inside the freezer — the evaporator fan is stalled or its motor has failed. Cold air is being made and is going nowhere.
  • A solid sheet of frost across the freezer back wall — the defrost cycle has stopped running. Ice has grown over the evaporator coil until air can no longer pass through it.
  • Both sides warm, compressor running constantly, condenser hot — think compressor start components, control board, or refrigerant. This is the one that needs instruments.
  • Both sides warm, nothing running at all — power, thermistor, inverter or main board.

Frost tells the truth. A refrigerant leak makes patchy, uneven frost on part of the coil and nowhere else. A defrost failure makes uniform ice everywhere.

What each pattern usually turns out to be

SymptomUsual cause
Fridge warm, freezer fine, no fan noiseEvaporator fan motor
Sheet of ice on freezer back wallDefrost heater, thermostat or sensor
Warm everywhere, compressor cycling on and offStart relay or capacitor
Warm everywhere, coil frosted in one spot onlySealed-system leak — often not worth repairing

We do not quote a figure over the phone for any of these. What it costs depends on which of them it turns out to be, and that is decided with instruments rather than over a description. Once a technician has diagnosed it you get one number, parts and labour together, and it is fixed before we start and does not move afterwards.

The Boston wrinkle: condensers and where these things live

Half the "not cooling" calls we take in July are not broken at all — they are choked. Bottom-mount condensers on French-door units sit six inches off the floor and inhale everything: pet hair, dryer lint from a laundry closet in the same room, plaster dust from a kitchen renovation two years ago. The compressor keeps running, but heat has nowhere to go, so the box loses ground on a humid August afternoon.

Two things make this worse here than elsewhere. Triple-decker and rowhouse kitchens are small, so the refrigerator is often built into a tight alcove with almost no clearance behind it. And a lot of Boston kitchens put the fridge next to the radiator or in the only spot that catches afternoon sun through a bay window. Clearance and ambient temperature are half the battle.

Pull the toe grille, look up with a flashlight, and if it looks like a grey blanket, vacuum it out and give the unit twenty-four hours. It is the only free fix in this article and it works often enough that we tell people to try it first.

What to do with the food right now

  • Stop opening the door. A closed, half-working refrigerator holds temperature far longer than an open one.
  • Move anything genuinely perishable into the freezer, not into a cooler in the garage — and see the separate piece on why the garage is a worse idea than it sounds.
  • Do not turn the temperature dial colder. It does not make a stalled fan spin, and it will run the compressor harder for nothing.
  • If the freezer is iced over and you want to buy time, unplug the unit with the doors open for four hours, then plug it back in. If cooling returns and then fails again in two or three days, you have confirmed a defrost fault for us.

When repair stops making sense

We give the same advice on every call. If the unit is under about eight years old and the fault is a fan, heater, sensor, relay or board, repair almost always wins — you are spending a few hundred dollars instead of two thousand plus disposal and delivery. If the unit is twelve years old with a sealed-system leak, we will tell you to put the money toward a new one and charge you the diagnostic only. Nobody at this shop earns a commission for talking you into a compressor.

There is one Boston-specific version of that conversation worth flagging: in a walk-up, in a building with no elevator, or in a kitchen where the fridge went in before the cabinets did, replacement is a much bigger job than it looks. We will tell you when repairing a marginal unit is the pragmatic answer for that reason alone.

Booking a call

We cover 120 ZIP codes across Suffolk, Middlesex, Norfolk and Essex County, and refrigeration is the one category we treat as urgent — call before noon and there is usually a same-day slot. Have the model number ready if you can reach it; on most units it is on a sticker inside the fresh-food compartment on the left wall or behind the bottom drawer. With that number we can often bring the failed part with us on the first visit instead of the second.
