The Back-Porch Fridge: Why It Quits in February and Again in July

A second refrigerator in an unheated garage, mudroom or back porch is a Greater Boston institution, and a standard model is not designed for it. The failure is in the thermostat logic, not the compressor.

Almost every three-family in Somerville, every ranch in Dedham and every Cape in Peabody has one: the second refrigerator, out in the garage or on the back porch, holding overflow. And every year it produces two waves of service calls — one in February and one in July — for what are actually the same design limitation seen from opposite ends.

The winter failure, which surprises everyone

Call in February: "the freezer thawed but the fridge section is fine." That sounds impossible. It is not, and it is not a fault.

Most single-compressor refrigerators have one thermostat, and it sits in the fresh-food compartment. It runs the compressor when the fresh-food section is too warm, and the freezer gets cold as a by-product of the same cooling circuit.

Now put the whole cabinet in a 25-degree garage. The fresh-food compartment never rises above its setpoint, because the garage is colder than the inside of a refrigerator. So the thermostat never calls for cooling. So the compressor never runs. So the freezer, which has no independent control, slowly climbs to garage temperature — and once the garage goes above freezing on a mild afternoon, everything in it thaws.

The refrigerator is behaving exactly as designed. It was simply never designed for that room.

The summer failure, which surprises nobody but is worse

Call in July: "it is running constantly and not keeping up." Manufacturers publish an ambient operating range, and for most standard units the top end is around 100°F. A closed, unventilated, west-facing Greater Boston garage on a heatwave afternoon goes past that comfortably. Above the range, the condenser cannot reject heat into air that is already hot, the compressor runs continuously, and the box loses ground.

Running continuously in high ambient is also what actually shortens the compressor's life. The winter problem spoils food; the summer problem is what eventually kills the appliance.

Garage-ready is a real specification, not a sticker

Units sold as garage-ready address exactly this, generally by some combination of:

  • A second temperature sensor in the freezer, or control logic that runs the compressor on freezer demand rather than fresh-food demand alone.
  • A small heater near the thermostat that fools it into calling for cooling in a cold room — crude, effective, and it is what most older "garage kits" were.
  • A wider rated ambient range, sometimes down near 0°F and up past 100°F.

The manufacturer states the rated ambient range in the spec sheet. That is the number to buy on. "Garage ready" with no stated range is marketing.

What to do with the one you already have

If you are not buying a new unit, the options in rough order of sensibility:

  1. Move it somewhere with a smaller temperature swing. A basement is nearly always better than a garage in both directions. This is the free answer and it is usually the right one.
  2. Use it as a refrigerator only in winter, and do not rely on the freezer. If the fresh-food side is all you need, cold ambient does not hurt it.
  3. Insulate and ventilate the space rather than the appliance. An insulated garage door and any air movement in summer buys more than anything you can do to the fridge.
  4. Give the condenser room. Six inches of clearance at the back and a clean coil matters far more in high ambient than in a kitchen.
  5. Do not add an aftermarket "garage heater kit" to a modern electronically-controlled unit unless the manufacturer sells one for that model. On a board-controlled fridge you are lying to a sensor the board also uses for defrost timing, and the results are unpredictable.

The chest freezer question

Chest and upright freezers in garages are a different and much better story. A dedicated freezer's thermostat is in the freezer, so cold ambient simply means it runs less. Most handle an unheated New England garage without complaint. If you want reliable garage cold storage, a dedicated freezer plus a small garage-rated refrigerator beats one repurposed kitchen unit.

When to call us and when not to

Do not call in February because the garage fridge's freezer thawed and the fridge is cold. That is the design, we will confirm it in ten minutes, and you will have paid a diagnostic to be told so.

Do call if it is running constantly in cool weather, if it is warm on both sides, if there is frost only on part of the freezer coil, or if it trips a breaker. Those are real faults and cold ambient does not cause them.
