Tracing a weak downdraft

We start at the vent and work outward. A saturated grease filter, a damper that no longer opens fully, a blower with a failing motor, and a duct that is crushed, disconnected or blocked at the outside hood all look identical from the kitchen: smoke drifting upward instead of being pulled down. Cleaning or replacing the filter is the owner's first check.

Long duct runs with several bends, such as those crossing a basement to reach an outside wall, cut airflow before anything has failed. That is an installation limitation and worth knowing about.

Oven accuracy and heavy doors

JennAir ovens use electronic control with a temperature sensor at the rear of the cavity, and sensor drift is a regular complaint. So is hinge wear on the heavy doors, which lets heat escape and imitates a sensor fault. Checking the door closure first, then the sensor, keeps the diagnosis honest.

Touch controls
