An AGA does not heat an oven on demand. It keeps a heavy cast-iron body hot around the clock, and the ovens and hotplates cook with the warmth stored in it. That changes the whole logic of a repair visit, and very little of the usual range playbook applies.

AGA Range repair across Greater Boston
The first thing we need to know is how yours is fuelled. Gas, oil and electric AGAs look alike from the front and differ entirely inside, with different burners or elements, different controls and different safety arrangements. The newer electric models add programmable controls, which is a different diagnosis again from a traditional thermostat.
Heat balance in an AGA range store
When an AGA runs cool, the store has lost its balance: either the burner or element is putting in less heat than it should, or the insulation and door seals are letting it escape faster than before. We work out which by examining the heat source's operation and the seals and insulation, rather than the oven where the complaint started.
Door seals and hinges wear and are replaceable. The cast body itself effectively never wears out.
Fired models and the flue
Gas and oil AGAs burn continuously and vent through a flue. A partial obstruction there, from soot, debris or a nest in the chimney, changes combustion and can reduce output or cause fumes.
Any sign of fumes, soot around the appliance or a carbon monoxide alarm means turning the appliance off, ventilating and having the flue and burner inspected before it runs again. Burner and flue work is never an owner job.
Programmable electric models
On the modern electric AGAs, thermostat and control faults take the place of burner problems. A plate that will not reach temperature on schedule may be a control issue rather than a heating element.
We confirm the model generation before the visit so the technician arrives prepared for the right controls.
Questions
FAQ — AGA Range repair
Can't see yours? Just ask us.
Should I replace my AGA if it keeps running cool?
Rarely. Taking one out is a building project, and the parts that fail are serviceable, so repair is almost always the sensible path.
Why is one oven hotter than the other?
That is by design: the ovens sit at different positions relative to the heat source and are meant to run at different temperatures. The complaint worth investigating is when both run cooler than they used to.
The carbon monoxide alarm sounds near my AGA. How serious is that?
Very. Turn the appliance off if you can do so safely, open windows, get everyone outside and call the emergency services or gas utility; the flue and burner must be checked before it is used again.
