The mechanical side is the constant. Burners, igniters, elements, hinges and seals are serviceable on both generations, so hardware faults stay economic to fix well into a range's second decade. Boards are where the two generations part company.

Older Dacor: the electronics question first

On a pre-acquisition range with a control or display fault, the first thing we establish is whether the board can still be obtained. If it cannot, you hear that during diagnosis, and we look at whether the fault can be isolated to a smaller component.

There is no point dismantling a range for a part that cannot be bought. Mechanical faults on those same ranges, from igniters to elements, are usually as repairable as ever.

Newer Dacor: touch controls and sensors

Current Dacor ranges use touch controls and displays that share their diagnostic behaviour with Samsung's. A panel responding in some areas and not others is typically the display assembly rather than the main board. Oven temperature complaints lead to the sensor, which drifts on these as on any electronic oven.

Heavy doors on both generations wear their hinges and gaskets, and those are checked before any electronic part is blamed for heat loss.

Gas burners and ignition

Dacor gas cooktops use a spark electrode at each burner. Residue or a cracked ceramic insulator gives weak, repeated or absent ignition.

Cleaning the burner cap is fine for owners; the electrode, module, valves and connections are for a technician.
