Induction, radiant and gas surfaces

An induction zone that will not start may simply not detect the pan; magnetic bottoms are required, so test with a cast-iron pan first. A dead zone with a known good pan points to the power board or a coil, while a fan that never stops can mean the cooling path is blocked.

Radiant glass tops lose elements and infinite switches, and a crack in the glass means the top must be replaced. Gas cooktops fail at igniters, spark modules and wet or clogged burner caps, which often follow a boil-over.

Downdraft vents and island installs

Downdraft ducts run under the floor or through the basement ceiling, and grease builds up where the duct turns. A weak draw may need the duct checked as well as the blower.

On the day
