Fuel type comes first on every AGA call we take in Greater Boston. Gas, oil and electric models share a body and very little else, and the newer programmable electric versions carry a control board where a traditional one has a thermostat.

Heat in, heat out

If the hotplates are slow, the question is whether heat input has fallen or heat loss has risen. Input faults sit at the burner or element and its control; losses come from worn lid seals, tired insulation or lids left raised for long periods.

Checking that the insulated lids close fully and are kept down between uses is a safe owner step. It often explains a plate that seems weak only after a long cooking session.

The fired models

On gas and oil AGAs, a restricted flue or combustion path lowers output and can affect safety. Burner servicing, flue checks and ignition faults are strictly technician work, and a gas AGA is leak-tested after any disturbance.

Owners should never open the burner compartment or flue access. A smell of fumes or gas means turning the appliance off if the control is reachable, ventilating and calling for help from outside.

Electric and programmable AGAs

Electric models with a traditional thermostat are measured and adjusted with a meter; programmable ones add a board and its settings, and confusing the two wastes a visit. We ask for the model and fuel when booking.

Because replacing an AGA is effectively a building project, repair is almost always the answer, and the cast structure itself does not wear out.
