Across Greater Boston we meet Samsung induction and radiant surfaces in new-build condominiums and renovated kitchens alike, along with a smaller number of gas models. Each type fails in its own way, so the first thing we ask on the phone is which one you own.

Heat, airflow and the inverter board

An induction zone makes its heat inside the pan, but the electronics driving it generate heat of their own, and a fan draws air across them from below. When the cabinet under the unit is packed with a drawer insert, a pull-out bin or boxed-in wiring, that air has nowhere to go and the board protects itself by cutting power or posting a code.

Fitting a new board in that situation buys a few weeks at most. We look at the cabinet first, confirm the fan turns and the intake is clear, and only condemn the inverter board once the airflow is proven adequate and the fault persists.

Touch panels that only half work

A Samsung panel that ignores the left pair of zones while the right pair respond normally is a recognisable pattern. The display board, the main board and the ribbon between them are separate parts, so a partial loss of response has to be traced to one of them rather than blamed on the controls in general.

Liquid creeping under the glass edge, a lifted connector and a genuinely failed board all produce that same half-dead panel. Samsung's service test mode, entered from the panel itself, lets the technician read what each board reports before anything is ordered.

Radiant and gas surfaces

On the radiant models, an element stuck on full or refusing to rise above low usually traces to the relay on the control board that switches it, not to the element. Where the element shows a dark burnt patch or a visible crack, it is replaced along with whatever overheated its connection.

Samsung gas surfaces misbehave like any sealed-burner cooktop, with fouled electrodes and ports clogged by boil-overs. A smell of gas is never a do-it-yourself job: leave the knobs off, open a window, keep flames and switches away and call the gas utility from outside.
