After the cleaning cycle

Self-clean pushes an oven far hotter than any recipe does, and older ranges show it. Range completely dead after a cleaning cycle is often a thermal fuse doing its job; oven door locked shut afterwards is a lock motor or switch; racks warped or discoloured after a cleaning cycle simply should have come out first.

Before a Thanksgiving clean, ask whether the range needs it. A heavy clean on a tired range is a common way to lose the oven the week you need it.

Older circuits, bigger demand

Houses from the fifties and sixties sometimes still carry the original range circuit. Range tripping the breaker, or a scorched range cord or receptacle, can come from the supply rather than the appliance.

Resetting a breaker once is fine; resetting it repeatedly is not. We test the element, the wiring block and the receptacle to find which is failing.
