Flooring is the other culprit. New tile or hardwood laid around an existing stove leaves the unit sitting lower than its surroundings, or tilting where it straddles the old and new surfaces.

Tilt, oil and uneven heat

A stove that is out of level shows it first on the cooktop: oil runs to one side of the pan and one edge of a skillet browns long before the other. Many owners assume the burner is weak when the real problem is geometry.

We level the unit on its adjustable feet, confirm the grates sit flat, and only then judge the flame. If a burner still underperforms, we look at the cap, ports and orifice. The missing bracket

Renovation crews sometimes set a stove in place and never fit the anti-tip bracket, particularly where new flooring made the old fixing point unreachable. Leaning on an open oven door is enough to rock such a stove forward.

Fitting the bracket properly may mean moving the unit out, which in a snug opening is done slowly so the countertop edges survive.

Front door or bulkhead

Most houses here have a driveway, but homes backing onto the Minuteman Bikeway have no vehicle access at the rear, so any stove that must leave the house goes out through the front. East Arlington's two-families off Massachusetts Avenue add tight permit-only parking.
