Maytag's name carries a lot of history, but a Maytag stove built in the past couple of decades is Whirlpool hardware from the cooktop down. Diagnosis follows the same sequence as its sibling brands, and parts cross-reference to them.

Maytag Stove repair across Greater Boston
Older pre-merger units are a different matter. Many still cook well, yet the limiting factor on them is whether a component is still made, so we confirm supply at the diagnosis rather than after committing you to a repair.
The surface switch that wears first
On electric Maytag stoves the component we replace most often on the top is the surface element switch. Its contacts carry the full element current every time a ring is used, and eventually they pit, stick or open.
Symptoms vary: a coil that only works on high, one that cycles erratically, or a knob that does nothing at all. Measuring the switch against the element tells us which half has failed.
Clicking without a flame
Gas Maytag cooktops use spark ignition, and the misread is almost always a burner cap knocked slightly off-centre after cleaning. With the cap askew, gas escapes unevenly and the spark cannot find it.
Lift the cap, check its underside drops into the recess, and let the head dry if it was washed. A burner that still refuses after that needs a technician; the valve and the supply stay off-limits to DIY.
Valves and safety devices
Gas valve and safety valve faults show up differently depending on where they sit. On the top, a valve that won't meter properly leaves a burner that cannot turn down; in the cavity below, a safety valve that won't open leaves a glowing igniter and no flame.
Every gas joint disturbed during the repair is leak-tested before the stove goes back into use. That applies equally to a Back Bay flat on natural gas and a propane farmhouse further out.
Questions
FAQ — Maytag Stove repair
Can't see yours? Just ask us.
Is my older Maytag stove still worth fixing?
Often, yes, but it depends on parts. Pre-merger models can be let down by discontinued components, and we check that during the visit before recommending anything.
Do Maytag parts cost more than Whirlpool ones?
Generally not, since the platform is shared. Mechanical parts such as switches, igniters and elements cross over readily.
One of my burners won't go below medium. What's wrong?
A worn valve or blocked ports can both cause it. The technician inspects the burner first, as a clean-up is quicker than a valve change.
