Nothing on an AGA works like a conventional burner. The cast-iron body is held at temperature continuously, and the boiling and simmering plates on top draw from that reserve beneath their heavy insulated lids.

AGA Stove repair across Greater Boston
Diagnosis therefore starts well away from the plate a customer points at. Fuel type comes first, because gas, oil and electric AGAs share a body but little else, and the newer programmable electric models differ again.
Why a plate goes lukewarm
If the store is not being replenished, because a burner is underperforming, an element is failing or a thermostat is drifting, every plate and oven cools together. If heat is escaping faster than it arrives, through worn lid or door seals, the effect shows first on the plate you use most.
Leaving lids open between pans drains the store quickly, and owners new to an AGA sometimes read that as a fault. Keeping lids down when not cooking is the simplest check before booking.
Flues and fired models
Gas and oil AGAs need a clear flue and a clean combustion path. Soot, debris or a partly blocked flue reduces heat input and can create an unsafe condition, which is why it is always investigated by the technician.
Any smell of fumes, soot marks around the flue or a burner that won't stay lit warrants turning the cooker off at its control and calling. Owners should not open the burner compartment.
Parts, seals and a very long life
The cast body essentially does not wear out. Burner or element assemblies, the control thermostat, lid and door seals, and hinges are the service parts, and they remain available for a long time.
Because removing an AGA is a building project, repair is the default. The technician confirms fuel type and control generation before ordering, since confusing a traditional thermostat model with a board-controlled one wastes a visit.
Questions
FAQ — AGA Stove repair
Can't see yours? Just ask us.
Why do you ask about the fuel type first?
Gas, oil and electric AGAs share a body but differ in burners, controls and safety devices. Knowing which you have means the right parts are considered before the visit.
My AGA hotplate takes ages to recover. Is it broken?
Heavy use with the lids up drains the stored heat, and recovery takes time by design. If it stays slow under light use, heat input or the seals need checking.
Should an old AGA be replaced?
Rarely. The cast structure lasts almost indefinitely, and the wearing parts are serviceable with long support.
