The seawall along Humphrey Street takes weather directly, and when it overtops, water reaches the garden-level and basement rooms first. A stove in one of those rooms is the appliance most likely to be put back into use too soon.

After a flood

Seawater leaves salt in the spark module, switches, wiring harness and gas valves. Even after everything looks dry, corrosion continues and can cause shorts, failed ignition or leaking valves weeks later.

Do not turn the stove back on to test it. Leave it off at the breaker and the gas valve, and have the technician inspect it before deciding whether it can be repaired or must be replaced. Gas valves that have been submerged are replaced rather than dried, because their internal seals cannot be trusted afterwards.

Salt air on the shore

Even without flooding, Swampscott's shore stoves corrode faster than inland ones. Spark electrodes, burner bases and trim screws show it first, and continuous clicking on damp days is a common early sign.

Saugus stoves, behind the marsh, see far less of that and fail in more conventional ways: worn igniters, stiff knobs and elements at the end of their life.

Saugus is driveways, attached garages and bulkheads with room to work. Swampscott's shore blocks are narrow, several without driveways, with houses above the road on exterior stairs. Cliftondale and East Saugus kitchens often receive a replacement stove through the bulkhead or garage rather than the front door.
