Coil elements under student cooking

A coil that heats only when you wiggle it, or crackles and flashes near the pan, is usually a burned socket terminal rather than a bad element. Replacing the element alone just transfers the fault to the new part.

Arcing between an element and its drip pan often follows spills that have carbonised in the pan. Turn the stove off at the breaker and leave it for the technician; the socket, the element and sometimes the wiring are replaced together.

When the knob loses control

An element glowing at full heat whatever setting is chosen means the infinite switch has welded its contacts. It is a distinct fault from a dead element, and the switch is a straightforward part once the model number is known.
