No power, no spark

Modern gas stoves use an electronic igniter or spark module, and the oven's safety system will not release gas without it. During an outage the oven stays off by design; that is the stove working correctly.

Please do not try to coax gas into lighting with a match or lighter while the power is off. Cook on something else for the evening and wait for the supply to come back; the stove will pick up where it left off.

After the power returns

Surges when lines are re-energised can damage a spark module or electronic control. Signs include burners clicking continuously, no spark on any burner, a blank display, or an oven that ignores its controls.

We test the module, control and wiring before replacing anything, and we check the supply at the outlet so a house electrical fault is not mistaken for a stove fault. Rarely, a module that clicks without stopping after an outage is only damp, and it settles once the kitchen has dried out and warmed through.

One trip, full load

Because this is the edge of our route, a missing part costs most of a working day. We ask for the model number and load igniters, spark modules, switches and control parts for that stove before leaving.

Access is rarely an issue: driveways, garages and generous kitchens make the physical work straightforward. Around Martins Pond and the Ipswich River side, the one thing worth checking before we arrive is whether a whole-house generator was running when the power dropped, because a generator transfer can itself produce the brief voltage dip that confuses a control board.
