Inside, the design is conventional: magnetron, transformer, capacitor and diode behind the controls. On top of that, the drawer adds a motor, rails and sensors that report its position.

Drawer faults

A drawer that stalls, opens partway or refuses to close usually points to the drive motor, the rails or the position sensing rather than the cooking circuit. Crumbs and spills in the rails are a frequent and harmless cause. A drawer that closes but will not start cooking is a different matter, and points back to the interlock switches.

Owners can safely clear visible debris from the drawer track. If the mechanism still stalls, the motor or sensor needs testing, which means our technician removing the unit.

High voltage, first step

Before any internal work on a Sharp, the capacitor is discharged. That is the first step, never a later one, because it can hold a lethal charge after the unit is unplugged.

Then the high-voltage diode and capacitor are measured, followed by the magnetron. Magnetrons often fail gradually, heating intermittently before stopping altogether.

Interlocks and value

Door or drawer interlock switches still cause more no-heat and no-start calls than the magnetron does. They are tested early and are cheap to replace.
