Sharp's microwave drawers add a powered mechanism to the usual magnetron circuit, so a drawer that will not open is a different repair from a unit that will not heat.

Microwaves are Sharp's home ground, and its drawer-format units are the models we see most often in Greater Boston kitchens. They sit below the counter inside cabinetry, which makes removal a scheduled part of any significant repair.

Sharp Microwave repair across Greater Boston

Inside, the design is conventional: magnetron, transformer, capacitor and diode behind the controls. On top of that, the drawer adds a motor, rails and sensors that report its position.

Drawer faults

A drawer that stalls, opens partway or refuses to close usually points to the drive motor, the rails or the position sensing rather than the cooking circuit. Crumbs and spills in the rails are a frequent and harmless cause. A drawer that closes but will not start cooking is a different matter, and points back to the interlock switches.

Owners can safely clear visible debris from the drawer track. If the mechanism still stalls, the motor or sensor needs testing, which means our technician removing the unit.

High voltage, first step

Before any internal work on a Sharp, the capacitor is discharged. That is the first step, never a later one, because it can hold a lethal charge after the unit is unplugged.

Then the high-voltage diode and capacitor are measured, followed by the magnetron. Magnetrons often fail gradually, heating intermittently before stopping altogether.

Interlocks and value

Door or drawer interlock switches still cause more no-heat and no-start calls than the magnetron does. They are tested early and are cheap to replace.

On lower-cost countertop Sharp models, the repair threshold is reached quickly. Rather than quote work that is not worth the money, our technician will say so.

Still have questions?

Same-day service, four counties.

  • Can you repair a Sharp microwave drawer in place?

Some faults can be reached in position, but motor, rail and high-voltage work usually means sliding the unit out. We plan that around your cabinetry.

  • My Sharp heats some days and not others. Why?

Intermittent heating often points to a magnetron nearing failure, or a failing diode. It should be tested before it stops completely.

  • Do I need to clear the cabinet around the drawer?

Clearing the immediate area helps our technician work efficiently. Our dispatcher will mention anything else when confirming the arrival window. Same-day visits are often possible, though they are never promised.
