Boards are sold separately from the wiring harnesses and control panels they connect to. That keeps a faulty keypad from turning into a full front assembly, provided the fault is pinned down accurately.

Two tests, not a guess

On a GE unit the high-voltage parts that make the heat sit on one side of the design and the board that switches them sits on the other. When food stays cold, our technician checks whether the board is sending the command, then whether the magnetron circuit is acting on it.

That separation answers the most expensive question early. A board relay that never closes and a magnetron that never fires look identical from the kitchen, yet they are completely different repairs.

Doors come first

Before any of that, the door interlocks are confirmed. GE uses more than one switch to prove the door is shut, and a failure among them can stop the unit dead or, less often, blow the fuse the moment the door is opened.

A blown fuse on its own is a symptom, not a cure. Replacing it without finding the switch that caused it simply means another blown fuse next week.

Over-the-range ventilation

Many GE units in Boston-area flats double as the range hood, and complaints about smoke hanging in the kitchen are often a ventilation fault rather than anything to do with cooking. A seized damper flap, a weak blower motor or a filter packed with grease are the usual culprits.

Checking the grease filters is a safe task for owners and worth doing monthly. The blower motor and its wiring, on the other hand, sit behind panels that also shield high-voltage parts.
