Dishwasher repair in Cambridge
So when glasses start coming out hazy after a switch, we look at detergent strength and rinse-aid dosing. Cambridge kitchens also lean heavily on compact and panel-ready machines, and those change how a visit goes far more than the water does.
Panel-ready doors and tired springs
In the newer Kendall Square and East Cambridge buildings, many dishwashers wear a cabinet door panel that matches the kitchen. That panel adds weight the door springs must carry, and if the installer never adjusted the spring tension, the door slams open or creeps shut. Door Spring Broken is a surprisingly common call on machines only a few years old.
We weigh the panel against the spring rating, fit the correct springs and set the tension so the door stays where you leave it. Taking the machine out of its cabinet is planned in advance, because the side fixings are hidden behind the joinery.
Etched glass is a one-way street
A glass that is cloudy but wipes clean with vinegar has residue on it. A glass that stays cloudy has been etched, and on soft water that happens faster when the detergent dose stays high. Etching cannot be undone, which is why we would talk anyone out of adding a softener here.
We set the dishwasher's hardness option to its lowest level and suggest a smaller dose. If a salt compartment is fitted, as on some European machines, we explain that it barely needs filling on this supply.
Term dates and who signs off
The first of September hits Cambridge harder than almost anywhere, and a lot of the stock is academic rental. A student reports that the dishwasher is Not Draining, while the landlord or a management company has to approve the work. We settle that by phone, not at the door.
In Cambridgeport and North Cambridge we plan parking around street cleaning. In Kendall the freight lift is booked in advance instead.
Water at a Cambridge tap usually comes from Hobbs Brook and Stony Brook, treated at Fresh Pond, with MWRA supply held back for droughts and plant upgrades. Customers sometimes notice a change and assume the water turned hard. It did not: both sources are soft.

Questions
FAQ — Dishwasher repair in Cambridge
Can't see yours? Just ask us.
The city switched water and now my glasses are cloudy. Is it hard water?
No. Both the city's own supply and the MWRA reserve are soft. The haze is almost always too much detergent or rinse aid for such soft water, so reducing the dose is the first step.
My integrated dishwasher door drops open. Why?
A heavy decorative panel may be more than the springs were set for, or one spring may have snapped. Fitting springs matched to the panel's weight and adjusting the tension fixes it.
Is a water softener worth it for a Cambridge flat?
No. On water this soft, extra softening makes the detergent more aggressive and speeds up permanent etching of glassware. Adjusting the dose does the job without it.
