The laundry itself often sits in a low-ceilinged cellar or a converted closet in a colonial house, which is humid, poorly ventilated and close to the harbour.

Mould, odour and damp

A washer that runs back-to-back loads, then stands shut between turnovers, grows mould in the door gasket and behind the drum. Guests notice the musty odour transferring to clothes long before owners do.

We inspect and clean the gasket, replace it if the mould has penetrated, and clear the drain path. Leaving the door and detergent drawer open between loads and running a monthly hot cleaning cycle keeps it away.

Soft water on both sides of the line

Marblehead takes MWRA supply and Salem draws on Wenham Lake and its partners through the Salem and Beverly board; both are soft. Overdosing is therefore the likely cause of residue, and scale is not.

Salt air near the harbour does its own work on hinges, cabinet screws and door-lock connectors, which is worth checking in any low, damp laundry.

Low cellars near Salem Harbour and in the Willows also stay damp through summer, which accelerates both mould and corrosion.

Streets that predate the machine

The McIntire District, Chestnut Street and Marblehead's Old Town have narrow doors, turning stairs and often no driveway. Replacing a washer there is harder than repairing one in place, which tips many decisions toward repair.
