The pattern we meet again and again around Greater Boston is the same one. A heater or defrost thermostat fails, ice gradually seals the evaporator, air stops moving and the fresh-food side warms while the freezer carries on apparently untroubled.

Why the symptom is so easy to misread

A warming fridge above a cold freezer sounds like a machine on its last legs. On a GE it much more often means a blocked coil, and a blocked coil is one of the cheaper repairs in refrigeration.

Our technician removes the freezer's rear panel, looks at the evaporator and tests the heater and thermostat for continuity. Only when defrost and airflow are both cleared does the conversation move on to the sealed system.

The door and the lower grille

GE door dispensers depend on a water inlet valve at the back and a harness that runs through the hinge. A dispenser that trickles, stops or leaks is usually one of those two, not the dispenser housing itself.

Behind the lower grille, the condenser fan can be obstructed by fluff, packaging or a dropped fridge magnet. Clearing that grille is a safe owner check; anything behind the rear access panel should wait for the visit.

Board or sensor

GE uses its own diagnostic conventions, and misreading them is how a cheap sensor becomes an expensive board. We verify the reading at the component before blaming the control.

When a board genuinely has failed, GE supplies it separately from the harness and the display it connects to. That keeps the repair to the failed part rather than the whole assembly.
