Auger machines wear like machinery

On nugget and flake machines, the auger, its bearings and the gearbox are the wear items. A machine that has stopped, groans or trips out may have a drive fault rather than a refrigeration one. Listening to the drive under load often tells the technician as much as any meter.

Scale inside the cylinder makes the auger work harder, which speeds up that wear. Descaling protects the drivetrain as much as it protects output.

Cube machines and harvest

On a cube machine, a harvest valve that fails leaves ice bridged across the evaporator. The machine may carry on freezing without ever releasing a batch.

Kitchen air laden with grease clogs the condenser and slows both freezing and harvest. Fan motors on either side of the refrigeration wear with continuous duty. Cleaning the condenser is part of every service visit.

Resolving 'no ice'

To the person reporting it, a full bin, a sensor that mistakenly reads the bin as full, a machine that will not fill and one that will not release all look identical. The technician establishes which it is before opening anything.

A bar or restaurant without ice cannot serve normally, so Scotsman calls are treated with commercial urgency.
