LG built its washer line around a direct-drive motor: the rotor is bolted straight to the drum shaft, with no belt and no transmission. That is a genuinely good design and it removes a whole category of failure. It also means that when something does go wrong, the fault list looks different from a belt-driven machine's.
The codes you will actually see
LG's error codes are two characters and they are worth learning, because three of them cover most calls.
UE — unbalanced. The machine has detected that the load is not distributed evenly and has abandoned the spin. It will usually try to redistribute a few times first, which is why the cycle takes forever before it gives up.
This is the most-reported LG "fault" and it is very often not a fault at all. Causes in order of likelihood: a single heavy item (a duvet, a bath mat, one pair of jeans), a machine out of level, a floor with too much give.
That last one matters here more than most places. A hundred-year-old wood floor over a joist bay in a Somerville triple-decker or a Dorchester two-family deflects noticeably under a 1200 rpm spin. The machine feels the drum move, reads it as imbalance, and stops. Nothing is broken. Options are a stiffer platform under the machine, moving it nearer a bearing wall or over a joist rather than mid-span, and levelling it properly with the lock nuts done up.
LE — motor locked / rotor position. The motor is not turning as commanded. Sometimes a genuinely seized rotor or a failed hall sensor, but frequently a drum physically jammed — most often by an underwire or a coin lodged between drum and tub.
OE — drain. Drain timeout. Work through the filter, the hose and the standpipe before believing the pump has failed; the sequence is the same on any brand.
dE — door. The door lock is not confirming. A worn latch, a strike out of alignment, or a door that has sagged on its hinge.
A code tells you which circuit complained. It does not tell you which part failed. Anyone who quotes a part off a code alone is guessing.
The hall sensor
Direct drive needs to know exactly where the rotor is, and that comes from a hall-effect sensor on the stator. When it degrades you get erratic behaviour rather than a clean failure: a drum that starts and stops, spins unevenly, or throws a motor error intermittently. It is an inexpensive part and a well-defined job, and it is worth testing before anyone talks about a motor or a control board.
Bearings — the one that decides the machine's fate
The failure that actually ends an LG front-loader is the drum bearing. It announces itself: a rumble on spin that rises with drum speed, growing over months, eventually a grinding roar and drum play you can feel by rocking the drum by hand with the door open.
Be straightforward about this one. On most front-loaders the bearing is pressed into the outer tub, and on many models the outer tub is a sealed plastic assembly, so the "bearing job" is really a tub-and-bearing replacement. The parts and labour together frequently approach what the machine is worth. We will give you the number before starting and we will tell you honestly when it does not make sense.
Two things bring bearings on early, and both are within your control: running a machine that still has its shipping bolts fitted, and moving a machine without refitting them. In a city that turns over its leases on one day every September, the second is not rare.
Top-loaders
The direct-drive top-load machines share the motor architecture and the code set. The additional things we see are the drain pump (same story as everyone's), the lid lock switch, and — on the impeller-style tubs — imbalance from loading habits, because a low-water impeller wash genuinely needs the load distributed around the tub rather than dropped in a heap.
