The more common story is less exotic. A GE cooler slotted under a Somerville kitchen counter or into a finished basement in Quincy often has little room to breathe, and the glass door leaks more heat than any solid door would.

Before blaming the GE compressor

A cabinet that labours to hold temperature tends to sound like it is failing, running constantly with a warm case. More often the condenser fan is choked behind the lower grille by dust, pet hair or a stored bag that has slid against the vents.

Clearing that airflow path, and checking the space either side of the unit, resolves a surprising share of GE calls without any part being fitted. We look there first, then at the door gasket, before we reach for gauges.

The glass door and its gasket

Double glazing insulates far less well than a foamed steel door, so the seal around it has to do a lot of work. Once the gasket loses compression, warm, humid air slips in, frost or droplets form on the rear wall, and the temperature starts to wander.

A simple test is to close the door on a strip of paper at several points; if it pulls out with no resistance, the gasket is not gripping there. Replacing a gasket is routine and far cheaper than living with a cabinet that never settles.

Defrost and fan faults on the GE side

GE refrigeration has a known weakness in its defrost components, and where a wine unit shares that approach, an iced evaporator can block airflow while the compressor keeps running. The symptom looks like a dying compressor but is usually a heater, thermostat or fan motor.
